Sakata is located in the west area of Yamagata Prefecture, it requires some time to be reached.
Since Sakata is not provided with the Shinkansen line, it is not possible to reach it directly from Tōkyō.
The quickest way to get to Sakata from the capital is to take the Shinkansen to Niigata Station: there, you have to take the Inaho Limited Express train heading to Akita.
The whole journey takes about 3 hours and costs 15.000 yen.
Close to Sakata city we can find the Shōnai Airport. From Tōkyō Haneda the flight takes about 1 hour (there are 3 or 4 flights every day).
Ōsaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo, Naha ecc. are not connected to Shōnai Airport with direct flights, so flying on Niigata Airport is more convenient.
From Shōnai Airport you can reach Sakata with the bus (40 minutes journey).
For further details, check here → Shōnai Kōtsū
The bus takes from 2 to 3 hours more than the train, but the price for the journey is halved.
There is also a night bus service from the Kansai region.
Since the number of rides is limited, you can check for a ride to Yamagata or Niigata city. You can take a train from there on.
