Temples and shrines, Japan is literally filled with them. They are often integrated, in the same complex, marked by a red portal (torii) at the entrance. The most famous temples are those of Kyoto, such as the Kinkaku-ji, the Kiyomizu-dera, the Sensō-ji of Tokyo, and the Tōshō-gū of Nikko, but many other incredible complexes are hidden in the 47 prefectures of Japan. The most important shrines, dedicated to the different kami of Japan, are those of Ise, in Mie, Izumo Taisha, in Shimane, and the famous Meiji shrine in Tokyo.
